China Policy Watch-Beijing may pile on stimulus soon
Aug 14 (Reuters) -The stage isset for China to ease monetary policy furtheras more lacklustre economic data loom. The recent acceleration in policy tweaks points to stimulussooner rather than later.
Wednesday's normalization of the USD/CNY midpoint, revealing the smallest deviation from neutral forecasts in months, creates two-way room for the yuan. Until late July, spot USD/CNY was pinned to its daily trading band ceiling, unable to rise. Its drop towards the daily midpoint in Augustallows the yuan to weaken, which Beijing might not see as negative- if it moves gradually - with exports slowing.
If USD/CNY rises onanother China rate cut while the USD broadly weakens, the yuan will depreciate on a trade-weighted basis, benefiting Chinese exporters. There is market speculation of a reduction in banks' reserve requirement ratios in coming days.
China's efforts to curtail speculative bond buying could counter-intuitively increase the potential for more stimulus. By trimmingcrowded long-bond positions, the chance of an outsized treasury market selloff in response to any substantial fiscal expansion is reduced.
The casefor further stimulus,even after July's surprising rate cuts, is solid. Core consumer prices continue to abate with producer prices, illustrating poor domestic demand, while bank lending hit15-year lows last month.
Thursday's release of monthly activity datawill likely corroborate the weak momentum. House price data is also due following a survey that showednew home prices rose at theirslowest in seven months.
The question is nolonger if or when China will ease policy, but by how much?
