HAMBURG/PARIS, July 8 (Reuters) -European wheat futures fell on Monday, tracking a slide in Chicago as favourable crop conditions in the United States and Russia shifted attention away from poor harvest prospects in France.

Front-month September wheat BL2U4 on Paris-based Euronext ended down 2.9% at 221.50 euros ($239.88) per metric ton. It earlier fell to 220.50 euros, its lowest since June 26.

The contract had risen on Friday as crop institute Arvalis and industry group Intercereales projected this year's soft wheat yield in France at eight-year lows.

"It's not really France that is going to drive the market, it's more about Russia," a futures dealer said of wheat. "

"There are expectations that Russian production will be raised back up and there's some favourable weather for U.S. corn and soybeans."

In Russia, harvesting of winter wheat was also progressing and last week's upward revision to the production outlook of consultancy Sovecon has underscored expectations that a recent improvement in weather has benefited crops after setbacks in spring.

In France, the winter barley harvest is showing worse than expected yields after poor weather hurt crops, raising additional concerns for the upcoming wheat crop.

“Export interest in new crop German wheat is thin because cheap Russian and other Black Sea prices are way below west EU markets,” a German trader said.

Repeated rain was slowing progress with Germany’s barley harvest, now underway.

“A widespread start to the wheat harvest in the north and eastern export regions is still 2-3 weeks away and sunshine is now needed after the rainy start to the summer,” the German trader said. “Barley harvesting has been difficult because of wet weather and there is some worry about barley quality loss.”
