Italy plans to start sale of former Ilva steelworks this month
ROME, July 23 (Reuters) -Italy plans to start the sale of the Acciaierie d'Italia (ADI) steelworks this month, its industry minister said on Tuesday, following preliminary expressions of interest received from some international players.
The ADI business was formerly known as Ilva. Its main plant in the southern city of Taranto is one of the largest in Europe and is a major employer in Italy's under-developed south.
Sale "procedures are likely to start at the end of this month," Industry Minister Adolfo Urso told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Rome.
Indian groups Vulcan Green Steel and Steel Mont, Ukraine's Metinvest and Canada's Stelco have all visited ADI's plants in recent weeks, according to government officials.
"Also in the next few hours I will meet with other international players," Urso added.
The sale comes after the government this year took charge of the group's factories in Italy under a special administration procedure, ending weeks of clashes with its then top shareholder ArcelorMittal's MT.LU, the world's second-largest steelmaker.
Weighed down by an increase in energy costs and a drop in rolled steel coil prices, ADI has run out of cash and has accumulated huge debts with suppliers including energy group Eni ENI.MI, prompting the government to offer financial aid.
