Sept 1 (Reuters) -Annual inflation in Peru slowed to 2.03% in August even though consumer prices, mainly for food and transportation, increased, according to data released Sunday by the national statistics agency (INEI).

The annualized inflation rate was 2.13% in July, within the central bank's target range of between 1% and 3%, according to the official data.

INEI said in a statement that the consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.28% in August, and that core inflation - which does not include food and energy prices - marked a tiny increase of 0.01%. INEI said that the CPI increase was largely driven by increases in the prices of some foods, such as potatoes, chicken and garlic.

Consumer prices increased by 2.10% overall in the first eight months of the year, the agency said.

Peru, the third largest producer of copper in the world, has shown signs of recovery in recent months following last year's recession. A 3.1% annual growth rate is projected for this year.
