BUENOS AIRES, Aug 29 (Reuters) -The Argentine corn planting area in the2024/25 season is estimated to drop17.1% year-on-year due to fears of leafhopper pest proliferation and possible droughts, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BdeC) reported on Thursday.

Farmers in the world's third largest corn exporter have begun planting for this season, but BdeC estimated they will plant some 6.3 million hectares (15.6 million acres) of cornfields.

The insect carries a bacteria responsible for wiping out vast swathes of the South American nation's last corn crop, with experts saying lack of frosts last winter may have fueled a population surge.

"After the rains, early planting is expected to become more widespread in the central agricultural area," the BdeC said in its weekly crop report, which predicted the possibility of some light rain in the coming days.

Meanwhile, reaping the 2023/24 season is now 99.3% complete, with a harvestestimated at 46.5 million tons, the exchange said.

Regarding the 2024/25 wheat season, recent rains have improved cropconditions in the east of Argentina's agricultural area, while in the west crops are in a "dormant" state awaiting rainfallthat would improve their situation.

The BdeC estimated the area sown with this season'swheat will reach 6.3 million hectares. The harvest begins in November.
