Recasts with Saturday's events

PARIS, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Sha'carri Richardson will be looking to end the United States' gold medal drought in the women's 100 metres on Saturday but will face fierce competition from Jamaica's jet-heeled sprinters.

In all, 31 champions will be crowned on day eight of the Paris Olympics, with U.S. gymnast Simone Biles competing for her third top podium spot of the Games, this time on the vault.

Here's what you need to know about the Olympics on Saturday.

BLISTERING SPRINTERS

World champion Sha'Carri Richardson's long-awaited Olympic debut got off to a sizzling start on Friday, cruising through her heat with a winning time of 10.94 seconds.

Richardson's Olympic dreams came crashing down around her three years ago when she tested positive for cannabis and had to miss the Tokyo Games.

The final takes place later on Saturday.

VAULT SHOWDOWN

Simone Biles will be chasing her third gold medal of the Paris Games on Saturday as she faces off in the vault final with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, the only gymnast to ever "stress out" the American superstar.

Look out for Andrade’s unprecedented triple-twisting Yurchenko vault, which she has yet to debut at the Games. This vault would bring Andrade’s scoring potential significantly closer to that of Biles.

GENDER ROW

The International Boxing Association (IBA) said it would award Italy's Angela Carini $50,000 in prize money after she abandoned her fight against Algerian Khelif in the opening minute of the Paris 2024 round of 16 bout.

Khelif returns to the ring later in the afternoon. She is one of two women boxers who failed IBA eligibility rules that prevent athletes with male XY chromosomes competing in women's event.

UNSTOPPABLE MARCHAND

Four finals, four gold medals, four Olympic records:Leon Marchand's exploits in the pool at Paris 2024 have promptedcomparisons with American greats Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz -- the only other men to win four individual swimming golds at a single Games.

"That's crazy. Those guys are legends. Legends of their own sport," said the youngster.

FRENCH FENCERS

France women's sabre team will be aiming for gold, after Frenchwomen Manon Apithy-Brunet won the individual title and Sara Balzer the silver medal.

The French are the big favourites: top ranked, with momentum and the crowd on their side.

CYCLING ROAD RACE

World champion Mathieu van der Poel is the favourite to winthe road race title on a 273-km course in and around Paris. But hewill need to fight off a formidable Belgian team led by time trial Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert.
