POLITICS

Pro-migrant groups and opposition parties have collected enough signatures to trigger a referendum on easing Italy's stringent citizenship laws for foreigners, government data showed on Tuesday.

(*) Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in New York on Tuesday that she considered the current laws to be

extremely good and did not agree with the referendum's proposal.

ECONOMY

Italy will keep a majority stake in national railways operator Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) in any potential plan to open up the company's capital to outside investors, Chief Executive Officer Stefano Donnarumma said on Tuesday.


DEBT

Treasury sells 2.25-2.75 billion euros 3.10% BTP short bonds due Aug. 28, 2026; 1.0-1.25 billion euros 1.50% BTPei bonds due May 15, 2029; 1.0-1.25 billion euros 2.40% BTPei bonds due May 15, 2039. Subscriptions close at 0900 GMT.


COMPANIES

UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

Germany's Commerzbank CBKG.DE, which is fending off advances from the Italian lender, said on Tuesday that Bettina Orlopp would take over as chief executive officer in the near future.

The German government does not see legal powers it could use to prevent the takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit, two government sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday that her government was keeping out of the matter.

"The Commerzbank affair does not regard the (Italian) government," she told reporters in New York.

(*) Unicredit said on Wednesday it had started a process aimed at internalising its Italian life bancassurance business by terminating existing agreements with CNP Assurances and Allianz.

Japan and Italy are in talks to sign a comprehensive memorandum of understanding for liquefied natural gas supplies, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday.

The agreement would allow state-backed Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security to buy the Italian energy company's liquefied natural gas with priority in emergencies such as a natural disaster, NHK said.

BANCA GENERALI BGN.MI

The Italian private bank said it had received commitments to accept its takeover bid on broker Intermonte INTM.MI for a total of 69% of Intermonte's shares, as of Tuesday.


EXOR EXOR.AS, STLAM.MI

The holding company of Italy's Agnelli family said on Tuesday it had posted a first half net profit of 14.695 billion euros.


ITALGAS IG.MI

Europe's largest gas distributor said on Tuesday it was increasing the amount of its bond due in Feb. 2029 to 350 million euros ($390.50 million) from 250 million, due to high demand. The annual coupon is set at 3.125%.


STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

Italian unions have called a one day strike on Oct. 18 for metal workers at Stellantis and its local suppliers to protest against the automaker's falling production in the country, the head of the UILM union said on Tuesday.


LEONARDO LDOF.MI

The Italian government has proposed spending around 1.6 billion euros ($1.78 billion) on new jets built by the Italian defence company, to use for its aerobatic display team, a parliamentary document showed on Tuesday.
