Nigeria's NNPC to supply Dangote refinery 13 crude cargoes in October

LAGOS, Sept 5 (Reuters) -Nigeria's state-oil firm will supply the Dangote Oil refinery a total of 13 crude cargoes in October to ease pressure on local gasoline supply, head of the firm's downstream operations said on Thursday.
Nigerians have been grappling with long fuel queues which started in July and this has led to a sharp increase in the pump price of gasoline and higher fares for commuters.
Adedapo Segun, executive vice president of NNPC Ltd, (Downstream) told local television station Arise TV that NNPC Limited, in line with government's plan to sell crude locally in naira, is supporting the Dangote Oil refinery with 7 cargoes in September and a further 13 cargoes in October.
"So we are doing everything we can to make sure this situation (fuel shortages) abates, as soon as possible," Segun said.
Crude supply to the Dangote Oil refinery in October will impact Nigeria's crude exports but help meet demand locally.
President Bola Tinubu's government last year opened up gasoline imports to private companies by announcing an end to subsidies but foreign currency shortages and a cap on the price of petrol has meant that NNPC remains the only importer.
This is set to continue with Dangote Oil Refinery which started processing gasoline this week.
Dangote Refinery could not immediately confirm what prices they would sell to the NNPC, but the state-oil firm has fixed 855 naira ($0.5411) as the pump price in its retail outlets, a 39% increase from the previous rate.
This has fuelled much discontent in the country as other fuel outlets have raised their prices, some by more than 50%
As Nigerians grapple with longer fuel lines, labour unions, small businesses and trade groups have opposed the new gasoline price.
"A steep price hike would likely trigger widespread price increases, potentially reversing the recent easing in inflation seen in July and leading to another surge in inflation rates," Chinyere Almona, head of the Lagos chamber of commerce and industry said in a statement.
Nigeria depends on gasoline imports because its government-owned refineries operated by the NNPC are not functioning due to years of neglect.
Gasoline exports could fall with Dangote oil refinery expected to deliver 25 million litres of gasoline into the market this month.
