What a Harris win could mean for the U.S. dollar
July 23 (Reuters) -U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris secured support on Monday from a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, likely ensuring she will become the party's nominee for president next month, but how might the USD react to her beating Donald Trump for the U.S. presidency in November 2024?
This is a question being fielded by many banks from clients who were invested in the "Trump trade", which presumes the former president's tax policies will lift corporate profits, while increasing U.S. fiscal and inflationary pressures, supporting the USD.
The reaction to President Joe Biden's election win in 2020 is probably the best predictor for the USD reaction to a Harris win. The USD index fell more than 4% between November 2020 and January 2021 amid expectations of a less protectionist trade policy. If history repeats itself, the drop might be more pronounced as the U.S. Federal Reserve should have just begun a series of rate cuts amid falling inflation.
Even if Harris doesn't win the presidency, she gives the Democrats a greater chance of winning either the U.S. Senate, or House of Representatives. A divided government is typically seen as a positive for risk and markets because it makes it harder for either party to force through dramatic policy changes.
