WALL STREET MIXED EARLY, BUT VALUE OUTPACES GROWTH

The main U.S. indexes are mixed early on Tuesday as unexpectedly strong retail sales data signaled continued resilience in the U.S. economy, while doing little to dampen expectations of interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year.

According to the CME's FedWatch Tool, the market is still biased for the Fed to begin cutting rates by 25 basis point in September, followed by additional cuts in November and December.

Meanwhile, recent outperformance by regional banks .KRX and small caps .RUT is continuing.

The KRX and RUT are both posting gains of more than 2% early on Tuesday.

Indeed, since last Wednesday's close, the day before much better-than-expected CPI data came out, the KRX has surged more than 10%, while the RUT has jumped more than 8%. Against this, the NYSE FANG index .NYFANG, which includes all of the Magnificent Seven stocks, is down more than 4%.

With this, value .IVX has easily outpaced growth .IGX over this period.

Of note, early on Tuesday, the Dow .DJI and S&P 500 .SPX are both on pace for record closing highs, while the tech-laden Nasdaq .IXIC, which is red, is not.

In terms of S&P 500 sectors, financials .SPSY, industrials .SPLRCI, and healthcare .SPXHC are all on track for record closing highs.
