INDIVIDUAL INVESTOR BULLS REIN IN THEIR HORNS - AAII

Optimism among individual investors over the short-term outlook for U.S. stocks fell in the latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey. With this, both pessimism and neutral sentiment rose.

Meanwhile, just over half of investors surveyed said the November elections are making them more cautious about where the stock market is headed.

AAII reported that bullish sentiment, or expectations that stock prices will rise over the next six months, declined 4.2 percentage points to 45.5%. Bullish sentiment is above its historical average of 37.5% for the 47th time in 48 weeks.

Bearish sentiment, or expectations that stock prices will fall over the next six months, rose 3.6 percentage points to 27.3%. Bearish sentiment is below its historical average of 31.0% for the seventh time in eight weeks.

Neutral sentiment, or expectations that stock prices will stay essentially unchanged over the next six months, edged up 0.6 percentage points to 27.3%. Neutral sentiment is below its historical average of 31.5% for the 13th consecutive week.

With these changes, the bull-bear spread retreated 7.7 percentage points to 18.2% from 25.9% last week. The spread is above its historical average of 6.5% for the 21st time in 22 weeks.

In this week’s special question, AAII asked its members how the November elections are currently affecting their expectations for U.S. stocks:
