Indian bond yields dip, ignoring weaker rupee and higher US yields; Fed decision awaited

MUMBAI, Nov 7 (Reuters) -Indian government bond yields slipped in early trading on Thursday, ignoring elevated U.S. Treasury yields and a persistent decline in the local currency as some traders covered short positions while awaiting the Federal Reserve's policy decision.
The benchmark 10-year bond yield IN067934G=CC was at 6.7931% as of 10:30 a.m. IST, compared with Wednesday's close of 6.7949%. The most-liquid 2034 bond yield IN071034G=CC was at 6.8292%, versus 6.8322% yield at previous close.
The Indian rupee plunged to a record low of 84.3050 against the dollar in the wake of expectations of stronger dollar in the coming months.
"Government bond traders are not reacting to any negative factors for now, and chances of a further rally are more if the Federal Reserve does not sound hawkish at its monetary policy decision," a trader at a private bank said.
The Fed's decision is due later in the day, and the market is fully expecting a 25 basis points rate cut.
However, interest rate futures are pricing out rate cuts after Republican Donald Trump was elected as the president for a second non-consecutive term.
Futures expect only an additional 42 bps of cuts after November over the course of next three meetings from December to March, with odds of a reduction in December easing to 70% from 77% a day earlier. FEDWATCH
Meanwhile, U.S. yields rose on Wednesday and stayed elevated in Asian hours on Thursday, Trump's victory ignited bets on economic policy shifts that could boost deficits and inflation.
Analysts expect Trump's policies on enacting higher tariffs on imports to stoke inflation, putting upward pressure on U.S. yields and slowing down the pace of rate cuts.
A sharp rise in U.S. yields could potentially be a drag for Indian bonds despite favourable domestic backdrop, Citi said in a note.
