Brazil's retail sales down for the first time this year in June

SAO PAULO, Aug 14 (Reuters) -Retail sales volumes in Brazil slipped for the first time in six months in June, data from statistics agency IBGE showed on Wednesday, undershooting market estimates, due mainly to a drop in food and beverage sales.
In Latin America's largest economy, retail sales were down 1.0% in June from May, IBGE said, their largest monthly drop since May of last year and in negative territory for the first time since December.
Economists in a Reuters poll had expected a smaller decrease of 0.20%.
Four of the eight groups surveyed by IBGE posted negative results in June, the agency said, with supermarket, food, beverage and tobacco sales the biggest drag as they dropped 2.1%.
IBGE research manager Cristiano Santos said the fall was due in part to what he called a "rebound effect", saying it was natural for sales volumes to decline after five consecutive months of gains.
They had in May reached their highest level since the current IBGE data series started in 2000.
In June, the agency said, retail sales grew 4.0% from the year-earlier period, compared to expectations in the Reuters poll for a 5.50% increase.
