Brazil police name 41 suspects in Americanas fraud investigation

SAO PAULO, Sept 2 (Reuters) -Brazil's federal police named 41 suspects on Monday in the multibillion-dollar fraud revealed last year that sent retail giant Americanas AMER3.SA into bankruptcy protection, according to documents seen by Reuters.
As per the documents, suspects who agree to help with the investigation will be offered non-prosecutorial agreements.
They will need to admit to any crimes.
Americanas was forced into bankruptcy in early 2023 after the alleged accounting fraud became public, reaching up to billions of Brazilian reais.
The people implicated in the fraud have been segmented in eight groups by the police, according to the fillings.
The main one includes former Chief Executive Officer Miguel Gutierrez and Anna Saicali, the former chief executive of the company's internet retail arm, known as B2W, who had both been previously named by the police.
The other groups are composed of executives from different departments of Americanas, among them accounting, investor relations and information technology, according to the documents.
Gutierrez was briefly arrested in Madrid earlier this year before being released. Saicali handed her passport over to the police, restricting her from leaving the country.
