Set for lower open, but all good really

SET FOR LOWER OPEN, BUT ALL GOOD REALLY
European shares are set to give back some of their chunky Thursday gains at the open, but it would take a bad day to wipe out all of this week's advances, with equities traders basking in a 50-basis point Federal Reserve rate cut at a time when the economy, at least in the U.S., is rattling along OK.
Stoxx 50 blue-chip futures are down 0.26%, with bigger moves seen in London, where FTSE 100 futures are down 0.6%. Appropriately enough, a Friday survey showed British consumers have turned more pessimistic after warnings by new Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the economy and public finances.
Nonetheless, the Stoxx 50 is up 0.85% on the week so far, and the broader STOXX 600 .STOXX is up 1.1%, so unless we get some serious moves later in the day, it should be a second week of gains for both.
The day's macro news saw the Bank of Japan have rather less effect on markets at its meeting Friday than it did at its August event. The BOJ kept rates on hold, and didn't deliver much of a shock to domestic share markets, let alone those overseas.
In terms of European company news to watch, the European Medicines Agency backed the use of Novo Nordisk's NOVOb.CO popular Wegovy drug to help ease heart failure in people with obesity, the Danish drugmaker said on Thursday. This marks the regulator's second backing for a use of Wegovy beyond weight loss.
There is also plenty going on in Germany, and the relations between the government and some of its largest companies.
German economy minister and vice chancellor Robert Habeck said on Thursday the government is considering ways to support Volkswagen VOWG_p.DE, which is planning factory closures on its home turf, and a German bank staff union on Thursday called on Berlin to prevent UniCredit CRDI.MI from buying Commerzbank CBKG.DE, warning of massive job losses if a deal goes through.
