Jobs data to determine size of September Fed cut

JOBS DATA TO DETERMINE SIZE OF SEPTEMBER FED CUT
Major brokerages including J.P. Morgan, BofA Global Research, Goldman Sachs and Macquarie expect a rate cut at the U.S Federal Reserve's September meeting but say its size will depend on August's employment report.
U.S. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in his Jackson Hole speech on Friday that the 'time has come' to cut interest rates but signalled the direction was unclear and that the timing and pace of the rate cuts would depend on incoming data.
Goldman Sachs analysts led by Jan Hatzius said the speech reinforced their view that the central bank's tolerance for further signs of softness in the labour market had reduced and that it would now be quick in acting aggressively if the labour market cooled further.
J.P. Morgan analyst Michael Feroli said that the brokerage continues to see a 50 basis point cut at the meeting next month but it will depend on the August jobs report.
Deutsche Bank have a similar view but come down on the other side.
They stuck to their forecast of 25bps cuts at each of the three remaining meetings of the year but said Powell's speech had kept the door open for a 50 bp cut next month.
"However larger initial rate cuts would require more disappointing labour market data than what we've seen to date," the analysts led by Brett Ryan said.
This disappointing data, they said, could be a miss on the August employment report alongside other corroborating evidence of a sharper economic slowdown or deterioration in financial condition.
