Raw sugar rises sharply amid reports of fires in Brazil cane fields
NEW YORK, Aug 26 (Reuters) -Raw sugar futures rose sharply on Monday on ICE amid ongoing reports of fires in cane fields in top grower Brazil, while arabica coffee was also up.
There was no trading on robusta coffee, white sugar and London cocoa due to a UK banking holiday.
SUGAR
* October raw sugar SBc1 was up 3.7% at 19.07 cents per lb by 1443 GMT. The contract gained 2% last week.
* Dealers said several reports of large fires in Brazil cane fields in recent days led investors to cover part of their large short position in raw sugar futures in New York.
* Fires on cane fields in the main sugar area of Ribeirao Preto late last week led to the closure of a large mill owned by Raizen RAIZ4.SA, the world's largest sugarcane processor.
* Speculators had increased their short position on raw sugar by more than 20,000 contracts by August 20, the CFTC reported on Friday.
* Brazil sugar industry group UNICA is expected to release production data for the first half of August this week. A survey by S&P Global Commodities Insights indicates sugar production in the period at 3.28 million metric tons, 5% below the previous year.
COFFEE
* December arabica coffee KCc2 was little changed to $2.4735 per lb.
* Dealers said the coffee market has been supported by tight fundamentals, with reduced global supplies mainly of the robusta type, which led the November robusta contract in London to hit the highest price in 16 years on Friday.
* A Reuters poll indicated prices could rise further towards year-end.
* There is forecast for some rains to reach part of the coffee producing areas in top grower Brazil, but in very light volumes. The South Minas Gerais area could get some, as little as 4 millimeters (0.16 inch).
COCOA
* December New York cocoa CCc2 rose 0.5% to $7,852 a ton. The contract earlier rose to the highest price in more than a month at $7,949/ton.
* Rains were mainly below average last week in most of Ivory Coast's main cocoa regions, with more rains mixed with sun needed in September and October to boost the October-to-March main crop's duration and size, farmers said on Monday.
