Veon Q1 core earnings up 5.1% as it keeps clients after Ukraine cyberattack

May 16 (Reuters) -Netherlands-listed telecom company Veon VON.AS, which owns Ukraine's biggest mobile operator Kyivstar, on Thursday posted 5.1% growth in first-quarter core profit as it retained customers following a cyberattack on the unit last year.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were $386 million, up 5.1% on a year earlier in local currency terms, the company said in a statement. It maintained its full-year outlook.
In October last year, Veon exited Russia - a market that had generated roughly half its sales - after EU sanctions led to resignations of some board members.
"We exited, and we exited totally. We don't have any other businesses related to Russia," CEO Kaan Terzioglu told Reuters.
He added Veon now focuses on "frontier markets" with large under-served populations, such as Ukraine, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan.
The cyberattack on Kyivstar last year had a $47 million impact on Veon's core profit, the parent company said.
"As of the reported date, there is no ongoing impact on the customer, and/or user activity in Ukraine," it added.
Kyivstar unit Helsi Ukraine, the country's largest digital healthcare platform, saw 11.1% year-on-year growth in users to 28 million registered patients, Veon said.
Veon's total number of digital monthly active users also rose by 40% year-on-year to 111 million users.
