Russian rouble flat despite forex sales by exporters
MOSCOW, Sept 27 (Reuters) -The Russian rouble was flat against the dollar and the Chinese yuan on Friday, as forex sales by exporting companies ahead of tax payments to the budget at the end of the month did not ignite a rally in the Russian currency.
By 0900 GMT, the rouble RUB= was unchanged at 92.65 against the dollar, according to indicative LSEG data. It was flat at CNYRUB= at 13.08 against China's yuan.
"The approach of the tax period peak on Sept. 30 did not lead to an increase in the rouble exchange rate. This suggests that from October, the gradual decline of the Russian currency may continue," Alor analysts said.
The rouble was also flat at 13.21 against the yuan in trade on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
The rouble remains near its lowest against the yuan in almost one year on fears about yuan liquidity once a licence by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control to wind down operations with the Moscow Stock Exchange expires on Oct. 12.
Trading in major currencies in Russia has shifted to the over-the-counter (OTC) market, obscuring price data, since Western sanctions on the Moscow Exchange and its clearing agent, the National Clearing Centre, were introduced on June 12.
One-day rouble-dollar futures, which trade on the Moscow Exchange and are a guide for OTC market rates, were down 0.15% at 92.62. The central bank's official exchange rate, which it calculates using OTC data, was set at 92.41 to the dollar.
The rouble was up 0.24% at 103.25 against the euro EURRUB=, LSEG data showed. Brent crude oil LCOc1, a global benchmark for Russia's main export, was up 0.21% at $71.75.
