Indian shares open flat as profit booking offsets IT gains

BENGALURU, Aug 14 (Reuters) -Indian shares opened little changed on Wednesday, as broad-based profit booking offset gains in information technology stocks after softer U.S. producer prices data signalled cooling inflation.
The NSE Nifty 50 index .NSEI rose 0.01% at 24,143.55 as of 9:29 a.m. IST, and the S&P BSE Sensex .BSESN inched up 0.06% to 79,013.2.
The IT index .NIFTYIT gained 0.6% after data showed that U.S. producer prices rose less than expected in July, signalling cooling inflation. IT companies earn a significant share of their revenue from the U.S.
The U.S. consumer price data for July, due after Indian market hours, is the next major data point that investors will closely watch.
Financials .NIFTYFIN and private banks .NIFPVTBNK shed 0.2% each. Private lender ICICI Bank ICBK.NS lost 1.1%.
Financials continue to be under pressure on concerns over cost of deposits, said two analysts, who anticipated further profit booking in Indian markets, due to elevated valuations.
"While India offers superior quality in terms of return on equity, compared to other emerging markets, this variable on its own cannot justify the current valuation premium," said Aditya Suresh and Suresh Ganapathy of Macquarie Capital Securities.
Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp HROM.NS fell 1.6% after missing June-quarter profit estimates on weak average prices.
Non-bank lender Piramal Enterprises PIRA.NS lost 6% after posting a drop in net profit in June quarter.
Eight of the 13 major sectors logged gains.
The broader, more domestically focussed small- .NIFSMCP100 and mid-caps .NIFMDCP100 shed about 0.2% each.
