CBOT corn rallies to 3-month-plus high on US stockpiles estimates
USDA says US stockpiles of corn, soybeans reach four-year highs

CHICAGO, Sept 30 (Reuters) -Chicago Board of Trade corn futures Cv1 rallied to a more than three-month high on Monday on news of massive U.S. corn stocks that still fell short of trade expectations, market analysts said.
Corn stocks were 1.76 billion bushels as of Sept. 1, up 29% from a year earlier and reaching a four-year high, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a quarterly report released early on Monday.
But analysts had expected 1.844 billion bushels of corn, a Reuters poll showed.
Market analysts said USDA's report appeared to reflect stronger-than-expected grain demand, including recent corn export demand from Mexico.
"I think in the big picture, the ending stocks on corn are getting smaller, not larger. So that means you balance back to the upside, not the downside," said Don Roose, president of U.S. Commodities Inc in West Des Moines, Iowa.
CBOT most-active corn Cv1 settled up 6-3/4 cents at $4.24-3/4 a bushel. Earlier in the session, the contract touched $4.27-3/4 a bushel, the highest price since June 28.
The USDA's September quarterly grain stocks estimates and annual small grains reports wereexpected to show some of the biggest U.S. inventories in four years. But the September stock estimate report has often surprised markets.
CBOT wheat futures Wv1 ended up 4 cents at $5.84 a bushel, amid ongoing concerns about poor weather hurting global output and after USDA lowered U.S. wheat production from its previous forecast, market analysts said.
Soybean futures had a choppy day of trading, after USDA reported that Sept. 1 soybean stocks hit a four-year high. But like corn, soybean stocks fell below trade expectations.
CBOT soybeans Sv1 settled down 8-3/4 cents at $10.57 a bushel.
Soybeans hit their highest price in two months on Friday as Hurricane Helene damaged crops and infrastructure in the U.S. Gulf Coast region.
