Bank dividends drive sparking rally in Singapore shares
SINGAPORE, July 11 (Reuters) -Surging bank stocks have Singapore's usually staid stock market outperforming the S&P 500 Index so far this month as investors in Asia look to the city-state for lucrative and reliable dividend yields.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Straits Times Index .STI has climbed 4.3% so far this month and a touch more in dollar terms due to the country's steadfast currency SGD=D3. If sustained, it would be biggest monthly rise of the year and compares with a 3.2% gain for the S&P 500 .SPX.
For the year, the index has advanced 7.2% and stands at its highest level since April 2022.
Financials comprise nearly half the index, and shares in the big three banks DBS DBSM.SI, UOB UOBH.SI and OCBC OCBC.SI have led gains and struck record highs on Thursday. Despite rising share prices, all have dividend yields of about 5%.

The speed of recent moves is eye-catching and suggests a shift in investor allocation is under way.

Anticipation for global interest rates to fall over coming months will likely leave Singapore's stock market yield even more appealing, analysts say, especially as its banks churn out record or near-record earnings.

"The dividend theme in Asia is up about 17% this year as investors continue to seek yield, especially with the prospect that the Fed will start to cut rates later this year," Goldman Sachs' chief Asia-Pacific strategist Timothy Moe said.
"Also note that the yield on equities is a real one, because earnings and dividends typically grow at least in line with underlying inflation. Therefore, the real yield pickup from Singapore bank stock dividends is attractive compared with local deposits."
