Stock Market News – European stocks reverse into positive territory; US earnings week unfolds with more tech companies on radar

Posted on July 25, 2017 at 1:15 pm GMT

All major European bourses advanced, rebounding after three days of declines amid a series of market reversals. The pan-European STOXX 600 advanced 0.80% led by strength among banks and commodity stocks. In the US, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones opened higher, helped by strong earnings from Caterpillar and McDonald’s, but Google-parent Alphabet weighed on the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Financials rose the most during the European session supported by a jump in government bond yields in the region. Energy and basic [..]

Stock Market News – Cars, airlines drag European stocks; US indices open flat as investors await earnings

Posted on July 24, 2017 at 1:15 pm GMT

Major European bourses had a mixed performance day with the French CAC 40 and the FTSE MIB gaining, while others fell, with the pan-European STOXX 600 down a quarter of a percent. Among sectors, airlines and autos fared the worst. In the US, major indices opened broadly unchanged and close to last week’s record highs. European equities had a mixed start to the week with data showing the Eurozone economy mildly slowing down in July. IHS Markit said its PMI had fallen to 56.8 from 57.4 in June [..]

Investment Theme – Intense tech sell-off an end to incredible rally or mere profit-taking?

Posted on June 12, 2017 at 3:06 pm GMT

The sharp drop in technology stocks on Friday acted as a drag on major Wall Street indices, predominantly on the Nasdaq Composite, an index heavily-weighted towards information technology stocks. The IT sector was, prior to last week’s setback, dominating share price growth in US equity markets during the course of the year. It is also interesting that the sell-off that took place towards the end of last week’s trading was particularly noticeable among the biggest names in IT. Stocks in [..]

Investment Theme – End of Trump rally boosts safe havens but is it too early to bring out the bears?

Posted on May 18, 2017 at 3:01 pm GMT

The latest controversy in the White House appears to have been the nail in the coffin for the Trump rally that gripped the markets when Donald Trump unexpectedly won the US presidential election on November 8. The Trump campaign’s promises of big tax cuts, massive infrastructure spending and deregulation boosted equities not just in the US but globally too, and led investors to anticipate a faster pace of rate increases by the Fed due to the potential lift to economic [..]

European Session – Dollar index below 99 on Trump reform concerns; index lowest in four months

Posted on March 27, 2017 at 3:04 pm GMT

In today’s European session the dollar continued declining on the back of Friday’s failed attempt by the Trump administration to repeal the previous administration’s Affordable Care Act (ACA), widely known as Obamacare. In terms of economic data, the Ifo surveys measuring business morale in Europe’s biggest economy, Germany, all exceeded expectations. The dollar index fell below the 99 level for the first time since November 11 to reach 98.86 and was last down seven-tenths of a percent relative to Friday’s [..]

Technical Analysis – US 500 stock index could extend all-time highs before correction

Posted on November 25, 2016 at 9:03 am GMT

The US 500 stock index has recently made fresh all-time highs above the August highs of 2193.  Of course the new high of 2208 was less than one percent above the previous high, so it has not exactly been a very impressive or violent breakout. As a result of this, the Relative Strength Index is at 67 – close but not yet above the 70 mark that would result in an overbought reading.  The Ichimoku analysis is positive as the [..]

Technical Analysis – US500 Futures index reclaims 2000 level in pre-Christmas rally

Posted on December 24, 2015 at 11:34 am GMT

The US-500 futures index posted an impressive 2.9% rally in the first three days of the week, taking it back above the 2000 level. The index slipped below the psychologically important 2000 mark following the Fed’s first rate hike in nearly a decade on December 16. The rally has taken prices just above the Ichimoku cloud but have met resistance at the 200-day moving average around 2055. RSI is looking neutral in the daily chart but the stochastics are still [..]

Technical Analysis – US500 stock futures rise above 200-DMA; bias turns bullish

Posted on October 26, 2015 at 3:03 pm GMT

US500 stock futures rose above the 200-day moving average for the first time since August 20, recouping its year-to-date losses in the process. The index has been rallying since the end of September and has retraced more than 61.8% of the July-August downleg. The strong upside momentum has faltered in the hourly RSI and stochastics charts but remains positive in the daily charts suggesting the rally may hold for a while longer in the near term. With prices sharply above [..]

Technical Analysis – US benchmark index slumps to 10-month low deepening the bearish outlook

Posted on August 24, 2015 at 1:48 pm GMT

The US benchmark index was heading for a fifth straight day of losses on Monday as it broke below the 1900 level to hit a low of 1830.40 at the start of US trading. Today’s sell-off to 10-month lows could push prices to test 1812.75, which is the support level from the October 2014 downturn. With prices now sharply below the moving averages and the Ichimoku cloud, the medium-term outlook is looking increasingly bearish. The US index has breached the [..]

Technical Analysis – US 500 Daily: US stocks start 2015 on a negative footing

Posted on January 6, 2015 at 8:18 am GMT

The index of 500 largest-capitalized US stocks registered a fresh all-time high on December 29 at 2092 and closed 2014 with impressive gains of more than 11%.  During the New Year however, the US stock market benchmark has seen substantial profit-taking.  The index is an important indicator of risk appetite and of confidence in the US and global economies. The drops have led the price action to dip inside the cloud according to the Ichimoku analysis and it remains to [..]
