The US dollar extended yesterday’s impressive gains against the yen but the euro struggled. The New Zealand dollar was another major gainer, while gold reversed its earlier losses following fresh threats from North Korea. On Monday, investors had a bit more appetite for risk in Asia, giving some support to the dollar, as North Korea celebrated the anniversary of its founding without any additional missile tests. In energy markets, oil prices showed some recovery after ministers from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Kazakhstan discussed the potential of extending the period of supply cuts ahead of the OPEC meeting in November. The US was in a state of emergency during the weekend as thunderstorm Irma passed [..]

Posted on September 7, 2017 at 8:01 am GMT

NZDUSD maintains a weak technical undertone and has been in a clear downtrend since retreating from the July 27 top of 0.7557. The market has been making lower highs and lower lows and is currently trading below the key 0.7200 level. On the 4-hour chart, the immediate risk is to the downside as prices have fallen below the 20- and 50-period moving averages. The bearish view was strengthened after the crossover of the shorter-term SMA below the 50 SMA on August 23. [..]

Posted on September 6, 2017 at 3:18 pm GMT

Trade and non-manufacturing PMI data were out of the US, while Canada released trade figures prior the BOC’s surprising decision to raise rates. The loonie climbed to a fresh 2-year high versus the greenback, while oil peaked at new [..]

Investment Theme – New Zealand dollar rally under threat from rising political risks

Posted on September 6, 2017 at 2:33 pm GMT

The New Zealand dollar had surged by around 10% between May’s 2017 low point and July’s two-year high, making it one of the better performing currencies of the year against the US dollar. However, central bank unease about the strength of the currency, downgrades to the government’s growth forecasts and an unexpectedly tight election race have derailed the rally. Even as the New Zealand economy enjoys strong growth and a huge government surplus, the kiwi has stumbled upon some unexpected [..]

Forex Market Review (Asian Session) – Dollar tumbles as North Korea promises a “gift of packages”; aussie retreats on disappointing GDP growth

Posted on September 6, 2017 at 7:36 am GMT

On Wednesday, markets continued being in a risk-averse mood as a North Korean diplomat warned the day before that more is coming from his country. However, in the US the focus turned to domestic policies, as Fed policymakers are preparing for their next meeting in two weeks’ time. With geopolitical risks in the background, the dollar weakened further following the dovish comments made by the Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari. Meanwhile, the aussie lost steam after the GDP growth data appeared lower than expected. Late on Tuesday, comments by a [..]

While the dollar was losing ground, the aussie and its cousin the kiwi hit fresh highs after the RBA governor Philip Lowe supported that the current monetary policy is appropriate given the risks of the already overloaded household debt. Posted on September 5, 2017 at 7:53 am GMT

The dollar entered a consolidation phase in Asia as investors remained nervous about North Korea’s possible future nuclear actions, while US markets provided little direction as they were closed for the Labour Day Holiday. Meanwhile, in Australia the RBA decided to keep its monetary policy unchanged, holding cash rates at record lows, but concerns over an appreciating exchange rate pushed the aussie down. Investors preferred to put their money in safe-haven assets during the Asian trading hours and avoid riskier assets as they were worried that [..]

Forex Market Review (Asian session) – Dollar ticks up in Asia ahead of NFP; Aussie weaker ahead of busy week

Posted on September 1, 2017 at 7:59 am GMT

With geopolitical risks remaining in the background and the tropical Storm Harvey devastating the Southern US, the dollar managed to reverse some of yesterday’s losses during the Asian session. Investors were also forming their predictions for the widely expected nonfarm payrolls released later today. The aussie posted short-lived gains during today’s trading after AIG manufacturing index and the Chinese Caixin came in better than expected. Following disappointing inflation and consumer spending readings published on Thursday as well as US Treasury [..]
