Asian Session – US dollar surges after strong housing data; yen down on stimulus hopes

The dollar posted a strong performance today, as it rose significantly against its main rivals – the yen and the euro. Dollar / yen was challenging the 121 level; trying to break out of its recent range and making a 2-month high in the process at 121.05. The yen’s high for the year is at 122. European Session – Euro falls sharply to one-week low as ECB steps up QE, dollar surges on robust housing numbers

The euro tumbled below $1.12 for the first time in a week early in European session trading in reaction to comments by ECB policymaker Benoit Coeure who said the Bank will adjust its bond buying program. Dollar surges as Fed signals slowing economy due to transitory factors

The US dollar popped higher against most major counterparts after the Federal Reserve released its monetary statement on Wednesday following a two-day meeting of its policy-setting committee. There were no surprises and the overall tone of the statement was somewhat flat, and mostly in line with market expectations. European Session – Euro hits 3-week high as dollar falls on weak US housing data ahead of FOMC

The euro climbed to a three-week high of 1.0965, helped by a broadly weaker US dollar ahead of the FOMC and also optimism that talks will get back on track now that Greek Finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has been sidelined from the negotiations. The two-year Greek government bond yield fell to 21.9% today, which was a good indication of optimism in the markets that Greece would reach a deal with its lenders and avert bankruptcy. Asian Session – Dollar pushes euro back on uncertainty over Fed actions

The US dollar managed to gain against the euro during today’s Asian session, as it extended gains from the previous day. The euro was pushed under the 1.08 mark to trade as low as 1.0749 as traders tried to interpret statements from two Fed officials the previous day as well as the minutes from the March Federal Open Market Committee meeting that were released late in the US session. European Session – Dollar under 120.00 yen ahead of FOMC minutes

The market’s main focus is on the FOMC minutes later tonight, leading to dollar weakness and a reversal of Tuesday’s gains during the European session. Despite broad dollar weakness, the euro was unable to resurface above 1.0900 even though Eurozone retail sales data were in line with expectations.
