Peru economy grows slightly in June as fishing rebounds but mining suffers

LIMA, Aug 15 (Reuters) -Peru's economy expanded slightly in June compared with the same month last year, the government's INEI statistics agency reported on Thursday, as the Andean country staggers out from last year's recession.
The 0.21% growth in June compares to the much larger 5% expansion logged in the prior month, with the embattled fishing sector showing a rebound but its critical mining sector slipping.
Fishing tallied the largest growth year-over-year, expanding nearly 57%, followed by the transport and housing and restaurant sectors. Peru is a top producer of fishmeal, a fertilizer made using anchovies, though the INEI said fishing for human consumption had ticked down in June.
Meanwhile, the mining sector in Peru, one of the world's top copper producers, dropped some 7.5%, followed by lower production in the construction and farming sectors.
Mining output, particularly of copper and zinc, fell in the month due to lower ore grades at sites as well as technical factors, social conflicts and other events that temporarily stopped production, INEI said.
For years one of South America's top performers, Peru's economy struggled last year in the aftermath of adverse weather events and anti-government protests that hampered the mining industry.
Peru's government has since spent millions of dollars to boost mining.
