Turkey's policy pivot cut risk of economic crisis, IMF says
Aug 29 (Reuters) -The International Monetary Fund said Turkey's economic policy U-turn last year significantly reduced crisis risks and began easing still-high inflation, though a tighter fiscal approach would more quickly and permanently reduce price measures.
The turnaround since mid-2023 tightened the overall policy mix, "sharply reducing crisis risks and raising confidence," the IMF said on Wednesday, after staff consultations with Turkish authorities since late May.
It said that Turkey's aggressive interest rate hikes, to 50% from 8.5% in June last year, along with some fiscal tightening measures helped ease the current account deficit, rebuild reserves and improve market sentiment.
In the statement conveying preliminary staff findings following the 2024 Article IV visit, the IMF said it expects economic growth to decline to around 3.4% this year, while annual inflation will drop to about 43% by year end.
"Growth is expected to moderate to 2.7% in 2025, with inflation decreasing to around 24%," it added.
The Fund said that while the gradual approach to combating inflation aims to limit the impact on growth, it carries risks including opening the door to future possible shocks such as a jump in energy prices.
"A faster re-anchoring of inflation expectations would reduce these risks," it said. "A larger and more front-loaded fiscal consolidation is needed to help reduce inflation."
"A tighter policy mix, focused on fiscal policy, would reduce risks and bring inflation down more quickly and sustainably," even as there would be "a short-term cost to growth," the IMF said.
