Suitor emerges for Liberty Steel's Czech unit
PRAGUE, July 25 (Reuters) -There are options to maintain some operations at Czech steelmaker Liberty Ostrava, Czech government ministers said on Thursday, as a potential buyer presented plans for secondary production.
Liberty Ostrava, part of the Liberty Steel group owned by commodities tycoon Sanjeev Gupta, has started a sale process and gone into insolvency proceedings after running into trouble last year when weak demand led to its blast furnace shutting.
It entered a debt moratorium in December pending restructuring efforts but said last month deteriorating market conditions prevented it from carrying out turnaround plans.
The Czech government has been looking for ways to tackle the crisis at the steelmaker, which employs thousands in the country's northeast and whose operations are mostly idle now. But the government has said it was not considering taking over the company itself.
"What we can say today is that realistic plans exist for maintaining secondary production, for maintaining a substantial part of current jobs," Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura told reporters on Thursday. "And strategic plans exist for primary production in Liberty (Ostrava)."
Secondary production refers to steel products, while primary production is making iron and metallurgical coke.
Stanjura's comments came after talks with Czech steelmaker Moravia Steel, which said in a statement on Thursday it had presented possible plans "to quickly take over secondary production", along with a strategic plan for using primary production operations.
It is due to give plans to the insolvency administrator.
Liberty Ostrava said this week it submitted proposals to unions to cut staff, including closing its coking plant, making it more attractive to a potential buyer.
CTK news agency cited a union official as saying it would lead to a loss of 2,600 jobs out of 5,000.
Liberty is also finalising the selection of an international investment bank to help find a buyer, it said on Tuesday.
