PARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - American Noah Lyles won the 100 metres by the finest of margins in one of the closet sprint finals the Olympics has ever seen.

One of the main pain points of the Games - the river Seine's water quality - is back in focus after training for the mixed triathlon relay was cancelled, though the race is set to go ahead on Monday.

Here's what you need to know about the Olympics on Sunday.

LYLES BY A WHISKER

After all the talk and all the hype,Noah Lyles delivered when it mattered most when he won a superlative Olympic 100 metres final by five thousandths of a second to give the United States the title for the first time in 20 years.

In one of the most competitive finals of all time, there was a blanket finish, with the stadium scoreboard initially flashing a photo finish for the first seven athletes.

UKRAINE'S MAHUCHIKH SOARS TO GOLD

Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the women's Olympic high jump gold medal, clearing two metres in front of an adoring crowd at the Stade de France.

Australian Nicola Olyslagers took silver and Ukraine's Iryna Gerashchenko and Australian Eleanor Patterson shared the bronze.

Mahuchikh fled her home in Dnipro after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but has kept her competitive career going and claimed Olympic gold weeks after breaking a world record that had stood since 1987 with a leap of 2.10.

DJOKOVIC TROPHY CABINET COMPLETE

Novak Djokovic fought off Spain's Carlos Alcaraz in a magnificent men's singles tennis final at Roland Garros.

After heartbreak in Beijing, London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, Djokovic simply would not be denied the one title that had eluded him for so long, winning 7-6(3) 7-6(2) in front of a enthralled crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier.

SEINE BACK IN FOCUS

The Olympic mixed relay triathlon competition will be held as scheduled at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) in Paris on Monday, organisers said after testing the water quality of the river Seine

Training sessions in the river were cancelled on Sunday, while Belgium pulled out of the race after one of their athletes, Claire Michel, fell ill, the Belgian Olympic Committee said.

Michel competed in last Wednesday's women's triathlon.

ALGERIA'S NEMOUR MAKES AFRICAN HISTORY

Algeria's Kaylia Nemour became the first African gymnast to win an Olympic medal when she secured gold with a breathtaking routine on the asymmetric bars that wowed the Bercy Arena crowd.

The 17-year-old's fast-paced routine featuring a number of complex release-and-catch manoeuvres delighted the crowd who came to support a gymnast who had previously represented France.

FORMER VENTURE CAPITALIST MAKES GOLDEN DEBUT

First-time Olympian Kristen Faulkner of the U.S. was by no means the favourite to win the women's road race on the Paris streets but in a three-way cycling strategy poker game the former venture capitalist rode away with the gold medal

In the final stages of the 158-km contest, Faulkner sprinted away from a four-rider group that included the two favourites, Belgium's Lotte Kopecky, 2023 road race world champion, and Dutch veteran Marianne Vos, one of the greatest of all time.

TAIWAN SHUTTLES TO VICTORY OVER CHINA

Taiwan supporters celebrated their country's first gold medal at the Paris Games during a badminton doubles final that took place without their national flag, as security staff enforced International Olympic Committee rules.

Lee Yang and Wang-Chi-Lin retained their title by beating China's Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in front of euphoric Taiwanese supporters, but some of them saw their banners confiscated and had to rub out their face paint.

BOXING GENDER DEBATE

Lin Yu-ting beat Svetlana Kamenova Staneva of Bulgaria by a unanimous decision in a featherweight quarter-final fight to ensure Taiwan's third boxing medal at the Paris Games.

Lin and Algerian Imane Khelif have been at the centre of a social media storm due to them having been disqualified at the 2023 World Championships after falling foul of unspecified International Boxing Association's gender eligibility rules.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said there was no doubt Khelif and Lin were women. The IOC said the IBA gender tests were illegitimate and lacked credibility.

TABLE TENNIS

China's Fan Zhendong earned redemption by beating Sweden's Truls Moregard in the men's table tennis singles final to make up for the gold he missed out on three years ago in Tokyo.

In the bronze match, 17-year-old Felix Lebrun won France's first table tennis medal since 2000 to cheer the home nation.
