Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has told her Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu that attacks on U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon are unacceptable, her office said on Sunday.


ECONOMY

Italy is discussing with banks how they should contribute to consolidating the country's public finances, government representatives said on Friday, ruling out targeting energy companies.


COMPANIES


INTESA SANPAOLO ISP.MI

Italy's biggest bank apologised on Sunday for an embarrassing security breach that reportedly targeted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other high-profile figures.

The bank also plans to appoint Antonio De Vita, a former top official of the Carabinieri police, as chief security officer next week, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.


UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

Germany is working to frustrate a possible takeover of Commerzbank CBKG.DE by the Italian rival, a stance that pits Berlin against Rome and Europe's regulators, several people familiar with government and regulators' thinking told Reuters.


German trade union Verdi would oppose a cross-border merger for Commerzbank CBKG.DE even if the bidder was not an Italian bank like UniCredit CRDI.MI, an official said on Saturday.

Barclays has sold all its potential stake in the lender, Italy's market regulator CONSOB said in a filing on Friday.


STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

Shares in French-Italian automaker resumed their decline on Friday after the carmaker said CEO Carlos Tavares would retire in 2026 and announced wide management changes which failed to lift sentiment.


ENI ENI.MI

U.S. investment funds are showing confidence in the group's strategy of spinning off growth businesses in order to attract financial resources, the Italian energy group CEO Claudio Descalzi said on Friday.
