MOSCOW, Sept 2 (Reuters) -Russia's January-August exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) increased by 7.3% from a year earlier to 20.7 million metric tons and jumped by almost a third in August compared to the previous month, mainly due to LNG from Yamal, LSEG data showed on Monday.

Europe accounted for 54% of the total, or 11.2 million tons.

Total LNG exports increased in August by almost 32% to 2.73 million tons compared to July and 24% year on year.

Exports from Russia to Europe were included in that figure. In August, they declined to about 0.96 million tons from 1.1 million tons in July and rose from 0.65 million tons year on year.

The Novatek-led NVTK.MM Yamal LNG site in the Arctic sent 12.9 million tons of LNG in January-August, the data showed. Loadings were increased by 11.2% year on year.

But in August, shipments from Yamal LNG increased by 18.8% to 1.71 million tons down from 1.44 million tons a month earlier and from 1.3 million tons a year ago.

Last month, 25 cargoes were loaded from Sabetta, compared with 21 tankers the month before and 18 cargoes a year ago.

At the same time, Sakhalin-2, controlled by Gazprom GAZP.MM, exported 6.2 million tons from the Pacific island.

Shipments from the project rose to 0.9 million tons in August from 0.3 million tons in July after planned maintenance.
