LISBON, July 26 (Reuters) -The world's fourth-largest wind energy producer, EDP Renovaveis EDPR.LS, reported on Friday its first-half net profit beat forecasts and more than doubled thanks to strong capital gains and a recovery of electricity revenues.

The company said it netted 210 million euros ($227.87 million) in the first half, compared to 80 million euros a year ago, while analysts polled by LSEG had expected, on average, a profit of 153 million euros.

It booked 171 million euros in capital gains from the sale of stakes in wind projects in Canada and Italy and a solar farm in the United States as part of its strategy to sell mature renewable plants to finance new ones and thus improve profitability.

EDPR, the renewables arm of Portugal's largest utility EDP EDP.LS, said in a statement that the increase in net profit reflected "the recovery of the operational performance and the capital gains", despite a 64 million euro increase of its financial costs.

It said that electricity sales rose 5% to 1.1 billion euros on the back of a 5% increase generation to 18,893 gigawatthours (GWh), mainly in North America.

Consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose 27% to 960 million euros, more than the 899 million euros expected by analysts.

EDPR, which operates in 28 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas, said that in June its installed capacity reached 16.6 GW, up 2.9 GW from a year ago.
