WALL STREET ENDS MIXED AS INVESTORS AWAIT ECONOMIC DATA

U.S. stocks ended mixed, with Nvidia rising while other heavyweights slipped ahead of economic data that may shed light on the Federal Reserve's trajectory for rate cuts and the potential for an economic downturn.

Nvidia NVDA.O, whose processors dominate in AI computing, added about 4%, while Alphabet GOOGL.O dipped 0.8% and Meta Platforms META.O edged down 0.4%.

Nvidia was the most traded stock on Wall Street, with $35 billion worth of shares exchanged during the session, compared to $12 billion worth of shares in Tesla TSLA.O, in second place, according to LSEG data. Tesla declined 1.2%.

Investors are awaiting Wednesday's U.S. consumer price index reading and retailer earnings to assess shoppers' demand.

Interest rate futures suggest traders are split over whether the Fed will cut 25 basis points or 50 basis points at its September policy meeting, according to CME's FedWatch.

In the event July U.S. retail sales data on Thursday comes in weak, it could reignite fears of a consumer slowdown and a potential recession.

Of the 11 S&P 500 sector indexes, eight declined, led lower by real estate .SPLRCR, down 0.6%. The tech sector index .SPLRCT added 0.9%.

Here is the final U.S. market snapshot:
