Nov 4 (Reuters) -U.S. law firm Vinson & Elkins on Monday said it has hired a partner from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett to co-lead its strategic mergers & acquisitions practice.

Sebastian Tiller, a New York-based partner, will co-lead the M&A practice alongside Steve Gill in Houston, the firm said. Tiller's clients have included regional U.S. lenders and private equity firms, as well as defense and cosmetic companies.

Tiller represented TCF Financial Corp when it was acquired by Huntington Bancshares Inc in 2021 in a $6 billion all-stock deal, and People's United Financial Inc in a $7.6 billion all-stock deal by M&T Bank Corp in 2022.

Looser financial regulations and lower corporate taxes under former U.S. President Donald Trump led to several mergers between regional U.S. banks.

Tiller was also part of the Simpson Thacher team that represented defense contractor L3Harris Technologies Inc in its $4.7 billion acquisition of U.S. rocket maker Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings in 2023.

That deal had attracted congressional scrutiny. U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and other lawmakers urged the Defense Department to thoroughly review L3Harris' bid to purchase Aerojet because Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing are dependent on products that only Aerojet produces. But the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it would not block the deal, L3Harris said in July 2023.

Tiller said on Monday that Vinson has been "consistently growing and expanding" its New York office, which was attractive to him. Vinson has about 200 lawyers in its M&A and capital markets practice group, a firm spokesperson said.

Tiller declined to discuss any specific clients, but he said he hopes to continue his client relationships at Vinson.

A spokesperson for Simpson Thacher said the firm wished Tiller the best.

Vinson, which was founded in Houston and has more than 600 lawyers, on Friday opened its newest office in Denver, becoming the latest in a series of several big, out-of-town law firms that have set up shop in the city. The firm has represented Colorado clients in M&A deals, initial public offerings and big-ticket litigation matters.
