U.S. STOCKS HIT ALL-TIME HIGHS ON FED-FRIENDLY DATA

The S&P 500 .SPX and the Nasdaq .IXIC notched record closing highs on Friday as investors sweated to the close of the first scorching week of July under the power of a megacap rally and a Fed-friendly jobs report.

All three major U.S. stock indexes posted gains on the day, with the Nasdaq leading the pack.

Of the "magnificent seven" group of megacap momentum stocks, all but Nvidia NVDA.O ended the session with solid gains.

Growth .IGX ended the session green while value .IVX lost ground.

FANG+ stocks .NYFANG soared, but airlines .SPCOMAIR tanked, ending the day down 3.4% after Raymond James said "the setup into 3Q24 is 'clear as mud' due to rapid market and product modifications and potential headwinds," including waning travel demand and air fare normalization.

All three major indexes advanced on the week, with the tech laden Nasdaq, up 3.5%, enjoying its largest Friday-to-Friday gain since mid-April.

The day started with a curve-ball from the Labor Department.

Its hotly anticipated June employment report came in above expectations, but a peek behind the curtain showed signs of softness, including cooling wage growth, an uptick in unemployment, and steep downside revisions to April and May data.

That's just fine by financial markets, who interpreted that softness as supportive of "sooner-rather-than-later" rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.

Next week's CPI report will provide the Fed food for further thought, along with a second take at June inflation, this time from the angle of consumer prices.
