US Cash Grains-Soybean basis steady-weak; corn mostly firm
CHICAGO, Aug 29 (Reuters) -Spot basis bids for soybeans were steady to weaker in the U.S. Midwest on Thursday, extending this week's softer trend as growers and elevators clear bins ahead of the autumn harvest, dealers said.
* The spot soybean basis fell by 10 cents a bushel at a crushing facility in Decatur, Indiana, and by 3 cents at a Cincinnati, Ohio, elevator.
* Corn basis bids were mostly flat to firmer. The corn basis improved by 5 cents at two Midwest river elevators and by 2 cents at an Iowa ethanol plant.
* However, the corn basis fell by 4 cents at Cincinnati.
* A few locations have rolled their corn basis to the Chicago Board of Trade December CZ24 futures contract as the CBOT September contract CU24 nears its delivery phase and Sept. 13 expiration.
* Some basis bids firmed on the roll. With the CBOT December corn futures contract CZ24 trading at a roughly 25-cent premium to the September CU24 contract, an ethanol plant in Linden, Indiana, lowered its basis by only 15 cents on the roll, in effect improving the basis by 10 cents.
* CBOT corn Cv1 and soybean Sv1 futures rose on Thursday on short-covering and an uptick in export demand, though expectations for strong U.S. crop production limited gains, traders said. GRA/
