KYIV, March 4 (Reuters) -Ukraine's average grain yield is likely to decline by 4% to 5% in 2024, the Ukrainian agriculture ministry said on Monday.

It gave no explanation for the possible decrease.

Ukraine is a major global grain grower and exporter but its harvests have fallen after the Russian invasion in 2022.

The ministry said corn, Ukraine's largest grain harvest, was likely to remain unprofitable this year while wheat "will have minimal profitability".

Wheat and corn were unprofitable in 2023 and this could force farmers to reduce the area sown to corn in 2024, producers' unions have said.

Ukraine's 2023 corn crop could total around 30 million metric tons, the government has said.
