** Shares in French spirits makers Remy Cointreau RCOP.PA and Pernod Ricard PERP.PA slip, with two analysts pointing to a report that Beijing could introduce tariffs on EU-imported brandy as early as August

** Online wine portal Vino-Joy points to an article by Yuyuan Tantian- a social media account with links to China's state broadcaster CCTV - citing people with knowledge of the matter saying that tariffs on EU brandy products could be announced by the end of August

** "This is the first piece that we've seen that suggests the anti-dumping investigation will conclude with tariffs being levied," says analyst Laurence Whyatt from Barclays

** Whyatt says the impact on the companies' business will depend on the magnitude of tariffs: "If we had a low level of tariffs, say 15%-16% then that's unhelpful, but manageable," he says, adding however that tariffs in the multi hundred percent range would likely severely impact volumes, potentially posing an "existential threat" to the cognac industry

** The EU last week imposed extra duties on imported Chinese electric cars from July, prompting retaliation from Beijing as it launched a probe into imported pork from the bloc

** China's commerce ministry opened in January a probe into European brandy and markets worried it could lead to tariffs

** Remy is down 2% to early 2017 lows, Pernod slips 1.8%
