Raw sugar falls as front-month expires, cocoa slides

NEW YORK, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Raw sugar futures ended lower on ICE on Monday as the front-month October contract expired, and amid forecast for the return of rains in top producer Brazil.

Cocoa slid, meanwhile, in thin volatile trade.

SUGAR

* October raw sugar SBc1 ​settled down 0.12 cent, or 0.5%, at 22.67 cents per lb, heading further away from last week's 7-month peak.

* Deliveries on the expiry of the October contract SBV4 were seen at around 33,500 lots, or about 1.7 million metric tons, according to traders.

* According to Brazilian forecaster Climatempo, a cold front is expected to form Oct. 7 onward, bringing rains to most of the centre-south of Brazil, which could be beneficial to next year's crop.

* Speculators ended their bearish bets in raw sugar futures in the week to Sept. 24, adding 36,182 lots for a total net long of 31,933, data showed.

* Analyst Green Pool cut its Brazil sugar forecast for this season to 39.1 million tonnes.

* December white sugar LSUc1 ​​rose 0.2% to $577.50 a ton.


COFFEE

* December arabica coffee KCc1 rose 0.4% to $2.7025 per lb. The contracthit a13-year high last week.

*"If we get good consistent rains say the whole month of October, it will help a lot to minimize yield losses," said a U.S. broker about expected rains in Brazil.

* Speculators trimmed their net long position in arabica coffee in the week to Sept. 24 by 1,982 lots to 41,649, data showed.

* November robusta coffee LRCc1 rose 0.3% to $5,498 a ton.


COCOA

* December New York cocoa CCc1 settled down $559, or 6.8%, to $7,722 a ton, having gained 8% last week.

* Favourable weather in top grower Ivory Coast is improving the main crop outlook and is helping keep a lid on cocoa prices, for now.

* Cocoa trade is extremely volatile also, due to very low open interest.

* Most of Ivory Coast's main cocoa regions receivedbelow-average rainfall last week, but farmers said it was sufficient to boost development of the next October-to-March main crop.

* March London cocoa LCCc2 fell 4.1% to 4,550 pounds per ton.
