Updates with additional detail from foreign ministry statement

MEXICO CITY, Aug 5 (Reuters) -The Mexican government said on Monday that it had submitted a request to allowEcuador's jailed former Vice President Jorge Glas to be able to go to a third country.

Mexico broke relations with Ecuador in April after Ecuadorean authorities forcefully entered Mexico's embassy in the country to arrest Glas, to whom Mexico had granted asylum.

Mexico's foreign ministry also said in a statement that while the request was pending, it also asked Ecuador free Glas from jail and be taken to a "safe place" due to his health.

Glas attempted suicide in April after his arrest, his lawyer said.

An Ecuadorean court ruled that the detention was illegal , but that Glas must remain in jail due to his previous convictions.

Glas was twice convicted of corruption and is now facing fresh charges.

Mexico severed relations with Ecuador over the embassy break-in in April, and has tapped Switzerland to handle its diplomatic work with the South American nation.
