July 9 (Reuters) -Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor who ran unsuccessfully to serve as Illinois' attorney generalin 2018, has joined U.S. law firm Paul Hastings as a partner in Chicago, the firm said Tuesday.

Mariotti, a litigator who often comments on legal matters in the media, was most recently a partner at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner. At least two BCLP associates are joining him in his move, Mariotti said, but he and a Paul Hastings spokesperson declined to name them.

BCLP in a statement said they appreciated Mariotti's contributions and wished him well.

Mariotti said his practice, which includes litigation, white collar defense and investigations, "grew tremendously over the last couple of years" and became more national in scope.

Mariotti declined to identify specific clients but said he expects his clients to join him and his team at Paul Hastings. He is representing South Korean car maker Hyundai and freight railway giant BNSF Railway in litigation, according to federal court records.

Mariotti ran as a Democrat for Illinois attorney general in 2018 after longtime incumbent Lisa Madigan said she wouldn't seek re-election. He lost the primary to Kwame Raoul, the current attorney general. In 2022, Mariotti left Thompson Coburn after six years for BCLP.

Mariotti is a former legal analyst for CNN and a former legal affairs columnist for Politico Magazine. He said he intends to continue his podcast, It's Complicated, which he co-hosts with Asha Rangappa, an assistant dean at Yale University’s Jackson School of Global Affairs and a former FBI agent.
