Japan futures down on stronger yen, lower physical prices

SINGAPORE, July 8 (Reuters) -

  • Japanese rubber futures fell for a fourth consecutive session on Monday, as a stronger yen weighed on the market, while weaker physical rubber prices in top producer Thailand added pressure.

  • The Osaka Exchange (OSE) rubber contract for December delivery JRUc6, 0#2JRU: was down 4.8 yen, or 1.48%, at 319.3 yen ($1.99) per kg as of 0145 GMT.

  • The September rubber contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) SNRv1 was down 115 yuan, or 0.78%, at 14,610 yuan ($2,010.21) per metric ton.

  • The price of Thailand's benchmark export-grade smoked rubber sheet (RSS3) RUB-RSS3C-BKK and block rubber RUB-STR20C-BKK were down 1.86% and 1.46%, to stand at 72.48 baht ($1.99) and 64.82 baht ($1.78), respectively, on Monday.

  • The dollar slipped 0.07% to 160.70 yen JPY=EBS, down from as high as 161.96 on Wednesday. USD/

  • A stronger currency makes yen-denominated assets less affordable to overseas buyers. FRX/

  • Oil prices were little changed as investors eyed energy supply disruption, with the largest ports in Texas shut before Tropical Storm Beryl likely strengthens into a hurricane and makes landfall on Monday.

  • Natural rubber often takes direction from oil prices as it competes for market share with synthetic rubber, which is made from crude oil. O/R

  • The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) is "strongly dissatisfied" with anti-subsidy tariffs proposed by the European Union, the industry group said in a statement on Saturday.

  • The EU imposed tariffs of up to 37.6% on imports of electric vehicles made in China from Friday.

  • Thailand's meteorological agency warned of heavy rains and accumulations that may cause flash flood and runoff from July 9-13.

  • The front-month August rubber contract on Singapore Exchange's SICOM platform STFc1 last traded at 164 U.S. cents per kg, up 0.3%.
