ECONOMY

ISTAT releases July CPI final data (0800 GMT) and June foreign trade data (0900 GMT).

Bank of Italy releases June data on Italian residents deposits with domestic banks, banks lending to non-financial companies and gross bad loans at Italian banks.


DEBT

Italy's top insurer posted a rise in first-half operating profit thanks to its life and wealth management businesses, while its non-life segment suffered a rising impact from natural disasters, Italy's top insurer said on Friday.

Generali said it would start its share buyback plan up to 500 million euros on Aug. 12.

The Italian financial group posted on Friday a 7% comparable yearly rise in its first-half net profit to 555 million euros, bolstered by the performance from non-life business.

Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has recently held some meetings over the bank's future, la Repubblica reported, adding that the government was hostile to BPER EMII.MI as a potential merger partner given the left-wing roots of its top shareholder Unipol.

As the rising market value of Monte dei Paschi makes it hard to consider Banco BPM BAMI.MI as a potential partner, the paper said Mediobanca MDBI.MI was being considered, adding a Goldman Sachs banker had instead proposed MPS presents a new stand-alone plan in September.

Italy's Economy Ministry is studying ways to strong-arm the country's banks into raising deposit remuneration, so as to boost cash customers keep on their accounts, putting a brake on the drain that's partly being caused by lenders' push on fees earned on the sale of financial products, la Repubblica reported on Friday.

Varas extended its mandatory takeover bid on the oil refiner, which was due to end on Friday, until Aug. 16, it said late on Thursday.

Rheinmetall RHMG.DE expects orders worth up to 25 billion euros from the Italian government for its joint tank-building venture with defence manufacturer Leonardo, the German defence group's CEO said on Thursday.

French retailer Fnac Darty FNAC.PA said on Thursday it had obtained from its lending banks the waivers required to go ahead with its bid for the Italian consumer electronics distributor.
