POLITICS

Italy on Tuesday appointed a special commissioner to tackle the spread of the blue crab, an aggressive species that is preying on local clams and threatening a lucrative part of national food production.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said taking her seven-year-old daughter on an official visit to China set a good example that should help advance the rights of working mothers.

Bank of Italy releases July data on Target 2 liabilities and European Central Bank funding to Italian banks.


DEBT

The Italian Treasury plans to sell 7.5 bln euros in BOT bills at an auction on Aug 9.


COMPANIES

The Italian bank on Wednesday improved its interest margin guidance for the year despite declining interest rates, after reporting a slight increase in first half net income.

BPER said net income totalled 724.2 million euros ($790.03 million) for the six months to June 30, up 2.8% from a year earlier. Conference call (0800 GMT).


CARMAKERS/STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

Talks between the Italian government and China's Dongfeng Motor Group about building an auto plant in Italy are at an advanced stage, Italian sources close to the matter said on Tuesday.

(*) Italy's government is planning to give from 2025 public incentives for car purchases only to those with 40% of their components produced in Europe, some newspapers reported on Wednesday.

Italy's third-largest bank on Tuesday raised its earnings and shareholder remuneration guidance for the year, after joining peers in posting higher-than-expected second-quarter earnings.

BANCA MONTE DEI PASCHI DI SIENA BMPS.MI

State-owned Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena on Tuesday raised its profit outlook and dividend payout goal through 2028, after second quarter earnings came in well ahead of expectations.

(*) Citigroup said on Tuesday it raised its rating on the bank to 'Buy' from 'Neutral'.


BANCA POP SONDRIO BPSI.MI

The chief executive of Italian regional bank Popolare di Sondrio, Mario Alberto Pedranzini, on Tuesday said he hoped the government would not introduce any new tax on bank profits.


SNAM SRG.MI

Italy won't use special powers designed to shield assets deemed as strategic for the country in relation to Vitol-backed VTTI's acquisition of Adriatic LNG, Italy's biggest liquefied gas terminal, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Earlier this year ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy agreed to sell their stakes in the Adriatic LNG terminal, with VTTI getting a 70% stake and the Italian gas grid operator the remaining 30%.


POSTE ITALIANE PST.MI

The Italian post office starts on Wednesday a second tranche of its share buyback programme for a total outlay of up to 41 million euros, it said on Tuesday.

The chairman of Italy's National Fashion Chamber Carlo Capasa, who is requesting government support for small and medium-sized enterprises, said that the sector's revenue fell by 5% in the first six months of 2024, daily Corriere della Sera said on Wednesday.

Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso announced on Tuesday a possible "moratorium" on loans for struggling companies in the fashion sector.
