BAGHDAD, July 21 (Reuters) -An electricity grid interconnection between Iraq and Turkey began operating on Sunday, the Iraqi prime minister's office said in a statement.

The grid will start supplying Iraq with 300 megawatts of electricity, it said.

The power imported via the 115 km (70 miles) interconnection line will be used to supply three Iraqi northern regions, it added.

Iraq currently imports between a third and 40% of its supply of electricity and gas from Iran, but continues to suffer from widespread power cuts, especially in the hot summer months when demand for power for cooling surges.

Iran frequently cuts its supply when it requires more electricity at home and also because Iraq has trouble paying for imports due to U.S. sanctions on Iran.

The United States has pushed Iraq, OPEC's second-largest oil producer, to cut its reliance on Iranian gas.

An electricity grid interconnection between Jordan and Iraq started supplies in March, supplying Iraq’s western grid with 40 megawatts.

Iraq will also complete a link to Kuwait's power grid by the end of 2024, the Iraqi electricity ministry said.
