BRUSSELS, July 22 (Reuters) -EU competition regulators on Monday opened an in-depth investigation into Belgium's plan to grant state aid to French energy company Engie's ENGIE.PA Belgian unit to extend two nuclear reactors.

Belgium and Engie clinched a deal in December last year for the lifetime extension of the nuclear reactors Doel 4 and Tihange 3 aimed at preserving the security of electricity supply in Belgium and neighbouring countries.

"While the Belgian measure appears justified, at this stage, the Commission has doubts as to its compatibility with EU State aid rules," the European Commission, which acts as the EU competition enforcer, said in a statement.
