PRAGUE, July 2 (Reuters) -The Czech Industry and Trade Ministry has opened an auction for public aid for up to 1,280 megawatt in newly built or refurbished power plants for combined electricity and heat production, it said on Tuesday.

The aim, approved by the European Commission, is to help decarbonise the country's central heating plants running on coal, it said.

The aid is for biogas, biomass and mine gas but can include natural gas-fired sources if they can be converted to low-carbon or renewable gases from 2050, the ministry said.

"The subject of the auction is the support of electricity produced from high-efficiency combined heat and power source with an installed electrical capacity of more than 1 MW in new or modernised electricity generation plants," the ministry said.

Projects must be on line by the end of 2029 to qualify for aid in the auction, it added.

Governments across the EU have designed various schemes to support electricity production to wean their power systems off coal.

The auction is part of a plan to build 3,090 megawatts in capacity with state aid of up to 75 billion crowns ($3.19 billion), it said.

Bids in the first auction are due by Sept. 20.

($1 = 23.4900 Czech crowns)
