BIG TECH RALLIES AS INVESTORS BET ON RATE CUTS

Wall Street ended sharply higher on Tuesday, with hefty gains in Big Tech after softer-than-expected producer prices data fueled bets the Fed will cut interest rates sharply in September.

Heavyweight AI chipmaker Nvidia NVDA.O surged 6.5% and lifted the PHLX semiconductor index .SOX 4.2%.

Starbucks SBUX.O soared 24.5% after the coffee giant appointed Chipotle Mexican Grill's CMG.N head Brian Niccol as chairman and CEO. Chipotle dropped 7.5%.

U.S. producer prices increased less than expected in July, indicating that inflation continued to moderate as investors bet the Federal Reserve is set to cut interest rates to avoid a recession.

Investors now await July consumer-price data on Wednesday and retail sales on Thursday.

Traders now see a 55% chance of a 50-basis-point rate cut by the U.S. central bank, from less than 50% before the report, according to CME's FedWatch Tool.

With Tuesday's gain, the S&P 500 has recovered about 5% from its recent closing low on Aug. 5, and it remains down 4% from its record high close on July 16.
