AND THE MOST LIKELY ITALIAN BANKING MERGER IS...

Citi last week asked clients what's the most likely deal to materialise in the Italian banking space as conditions are back in place for a fresh round of M&A.

The poll is now closed and the most voted deal was between UniCredit CRDI.MI and Banco BPM BAMI.MI.

"UCG is expected in the majority of the case to do a domestic acquisition in Italy (52%), and the most voted potential deal include UCG/BAMI (42%) or UCG MPS (25%)," writes Citi analysts Azzurra Guelfi.

A combination with BPM would make UniCredit Italy's largest bank with a market cap of around 68 billion euros ($73 billion), topping current leader Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI, per LSEG data.

The poll also touched on potential combinations in Germany. 61% of investors expect Commerzbank CBKG.DE to remain standalone, 22% expects a merger with UniCredit and only 17% with Deutsche Bank DBKGn.DE, Guelfi adds.
