PARIS, Aug 7 (Reuters) -There are 23 gold medals on offer at the Olympics on Wednesday, in athletics, sailing, artistic swimming, boxing, skateboarding and speed climbing, among other sports.
Here's what you need to know about the Olympics on Wednesday:
FLYING DUTCHMAN
Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen set a world record in the men's 200 metres flying lap as he topped the time sheets in qualification for the track cycling sprint.
FRANCE LOSE, FRANCE WIN
France agonisingly lost their men's handball quarter-final 34-33 to Germany, ending the Olympic hosts' dream of another handball double gold and marking the end of left back Nikola Karabatic's career as he retires from the sport.
In table tennis, however, brothers Alexis and Felix Lebrun and teammate Simon Gauzy qualified France for the men's team semi-finals.
DUTCH, AUSTRALIAN SAILING GOLD
Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands claimed the gold medal in the women's dinghy and the accolade of being the most successful ever Olympic sailor, with Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom taking silver.
Australia's Olympic champion Matt Wearn won gold in themen's dinghy, beating Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus, who picked up his second silver at his fifth Games.
AUSTRALIAN ARRESTED
Australian Olympic hockey player Tom Craig was arrested in Paris and was being held in custody for buying cocaine, a police union source said on Wednesday.
The Australian Olympic Committee had earlier said a member of the men's hockey team had been arrested without naming the player.
CLIMBING WIN
Poland's world-record holder Aleksandra Miroslaw won the women's speed climbing to claim her country's first gold medal at the Paris Games in the sport's Olympic debut as a stand-alone event.
800 METRES
Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi sailed through his 800 metres heat in one minute 44.64 seconds, the fastest time of the day in a wide open event.
HURDLES DEFENCE
Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn opened her Olympic 100 metres hurdles title defence by posting the fastest time in the heats, as all the favourites moved into the semi-finals.
Nigeria's world record holder Tobi Amusan and American Masai Russell are among those trying to stop her, while Cyrena Samba-Mayela is one of France's brightest hopes for an individual track gold.
RACE WALK RELAY
Spain's twice world champions Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez took the gold medal in the mixed marathon race walk relay by nearly a minute as the event made its Olympic debut.
NIGHT MARATHON
Amateur runners will get the opportunity to complete the same Olympic marathon course as the athletes in Paris on Saturday but with the added excitement of running at night on a well-lit route that passes through the city's iconic monuments.
PRODUCT PLACEMENT
From selfies with Samsung phones on the podium to Louis Vuitton cases at the opening ceremony, the Paris Games have widened the scope for sponsors' product placement, and this trend will continue in future Games, the International Olympic Committee said.
WRESTLING
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified hours before the women's 50kg freestyle final after failing to make the weight, the Indian Olympic Association said. The disqualification means she will not receive a medal of any colour.
MARATHON SWIMMING
The familiarisation session for the marathon swimming event in the Seine river went ahead as scheduled on Wednesday as water quality tests met thresholds, after being cancelled on Tuesday due to concerns over pollution.
